Objectives
WP8 – Outreach and Training
- To engage with, educate, and inform public, scientific and policy user groups
- To develop an informative and interactive suite of complimentary tools that educates and engages public, scientific and policy user groups and maximise engagement with end users.
- To produce educational and informational resources that deliver knowledge to end user groups
- To deliver a series of training opportunities that informs, educates and promotes best practices to professional users of hardware, data and data products
Description of work and role of partners
Description of work
Task 8.1 FixO3 website design, development and maintenance
BLIT (Lead); NERC
- Develop a FixO3 web holding page with basic project information
- Project website design and specification
- Website development
- Publicise and monitor access to TNA and SA services via the website (in collaboration with WPs 4, 9 and 10)
- Initial content preparation
- Initial content loading
- Testing
- Launch the FixO3 project website
- Provide training on use of website to other interested partners as required
- Ongoing uploading of website content provided by partners and developed in 8.2, 8.5, 8.6 and 8.7
Task 8.2 Targeted presentation of project outputs and “knowledge” to scientists, policy makers, industry and the general public for presentation on the website and design of a series of high impact visual outputs
UAzores (Lead); UiB, NERC, BLIT
- Preparation of FixO3 website content specifically targeted at end user groups
- Define 6 key concepts relating to FixO3 and open ocean observatories to present in a series of high impact visual outputs e.g. short video, posters and other graphics
- Design and develop the visual outputs
- Identify several key locations to display the visual outputs for maximum impact e.g. public aquariums, conferences and exhibitions and universities
- Present the visual outputs on the website, at the identified key locations and integrate into Social Media campaign for maximum exposure
- Produce yearly newsletters for distribution to FixO3 consortium members, advisory board, stakeholders and posted on the Project website for online dissemination.
Task 8.3 Development and implementation of visual data products into the FixO3 website
BLIT (Lead),
- Develop a platform to display the EuroSITES, ESONET and CARBOOCEAN open ocean fixed-point data and a set of prioritised interventive data e.g. data from sediment core sample, bongo nets etc. These data will be available for all or selected (where necessary) end-users via the FixO3 website.
- Design and develop visual products for open ocean fixed-point data that promote knowledge and project outputs. Data products will include maps and graphs and will be publically available (where appropriate) via the FixO3 website.
Task 8.4 Develop and operate a Social Media campaign utilising a variety of platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) and integrate into the website
BLIT (Lead)
- Design Social Media campaign to promote the FixO3 project and website to end users • Implement Social Media campaign
- Monitor success of Social Media campaign in maximising engagement with end users
Task 8.5 Organisation of training for less experienced users of hardware
OGS (Lead)
A three-day training course will be organised for existing and novel instruments mainly focusing on biochemical measurements on carbonate species, sensors for ocean acidification, fluorometers, and automatic nitrate measurements. The course will accommodate 15 delegates and serve to promote and disseminate the FixO3 label to a wider group of responsible engaged in meteo-marine observation.
The training will target less experienced users of hardware from various countries but also will engage participants from outside the FixO3 partnership and non-EU partners. The training will focus on all steps of the use of the instruments from the calibration process and its set up to the downloading phase and data conversion process.
Course materials will be available via the FixO3 website for wider uptake and remote learning.
Task 8.6 Organisation of training for less experienced users of data
UniHB (Lead)
A two-day workshop will be organised, comprising a mixture of lectures and hands-on sessions. The topics addressed will be:
- The use of existing European marine data infrastructures to obtain data (e.g. SeaDataNet, EMODNet, MyOcean, PANGAEA, EurOBIS, ICES)(COPERNICUS from 2014),
- The importance of metadata and property rights,
- The use of key online and stand-alone tools/software to help aggregate, harmonise and transformation (e.g. WoRMS, ODV, Matlab, R packages, Excel).
Guest lecturers, including data managers and bioinformaticians, will offer close training to 20 participants, preferably PhD students, and early career scientists.
Course materials will be available via the FixO3 website for wider uptake.
Task 8.7 Organisation of training for less experienced users of data products
NIOZ (Lead)
A two-day training course on aspects of acquisition, validation and quality control, and access to interventive (biodiversity) data. The course will accommodate 20 participants and will target professional users of FixO3 data from fixed-points observations with less experience in interventive data. Part of the training will focus on integrating physical and biodiversity data for data products that may be required to meet policy needs e.g. GES descriptors.
Course materials and an evaluation of the course content and delivery by organisers and participants will be published on the FixO3 website.
