IMAR-logoThe Centre of IMAR of the University of the Azores is involved in research and educational activities related with the ecology and ecosystem based management of island slopes, open ocean and deep-water including hydrothermal vents, seamounts and cold water coral ecosystems. Additionally, the unit is given special emphasis to ecosystem based management approaches and is currently developing ecosystem models to the region. The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Risk Assessment (CVARG) is a multidisciplinary research unit and a member of the World Organization of Volcano Observatories. Its activities are directed towards the prevention and forecasting of natural catastrophes. It develops its main activities in the Volcanology domain and associated phenomena, including volcanic activity, earthquakes, ground deformation, landslides and tsunamis, with emphasis on multi-parametric monitoring of geological hazards in the Azores region.
