Description of the infrastructure:

In Western Ionian Sea (2100 m depth, 25 km off-shore the harbour of Catania) a cabled deep-sea observatory was set up and is operational in real time since 2005: the cabled deep-sea multi-parameter station NEMO-SN1 (@TSN branch), equipped with geophysical and environmental sensors and the cabled NEMO-OνDE station (@TSS branch), equipped with 4 wide-band hydrophones. The site infrastructure consists of a shore laboratory, a 28 km long electro-optical cable connecting the shore lab to the deep-sea lab. The shore laboratory hosts the land termination of the cable, the on-shore data acquisition system and power supplies for underwater instrumentation. The deployment/recovery and connection of the deep-sea structures is performed using the Deep Sea Shuttle (DSS) handling facility (max weight 40 kN) and the dedicated PEGASO ROV (SeaEye rated 4000 m w.d. with 2 manipulators Schilling), jointly owned and operated by INGV and INFN.

Current status of infrastructure at time of proposal:

 The seafloor observatory NEMO-SN1 is currently being re-deployed after refurbishment and installations of new electronics. Seafloor modules will be made accessible for TNA during starting from the year 2015.

Installation 1:  Seafloor

Hosting:  NEMO-SN1 modules have spare connectors to host other systems for long term real-time data acquisition. The TSN cable branch has 2 conductors and 4 fibres directly connected to shore, the TSS branch has 4 conductors and 6 fibres.

Data: temperature, conductivity, pressure, punctual vector current speed, current profile, seismics, acoustics, magnetics, gravity.

Data acquired from new systems will be integrated in NEMO-SN1 data server and distributed to user communities.

Services Available SN1 is a real-time designed data providing system. A wide range of oceanographic, seismic, geophysical data are sent to the surface thanks to an electro-optical cable. As introduced above the first data structure for storage and dissemination has been file system oriented. This permitted in a first step to store data in a hierarchical manner using a directory structure with explicit file names etc...The file formats have been often decided by the sensors and instruments manufacturers and hence converted towards a human readable files. In the framework of several projects such as ESONET and EMSO the data management is evolving to a comprehensive information system. A structured relational database has been designed and implemented where all the time series are stored and automatically inserted. Huge data such as seismic and acoustic ones are still stored in a file system but indexed and described by up-to-date Metadata standards. Recently the acquisition software module of SN1 has been modified and given the possibility to Include data directly to a relational database. This enhancement allows the users to reach data more easier and the system administrators to monitor the system remotely since all the sensors status are stored in the database on the fly. The data are then migrated and integrated to the central database using conventional procedures for database replication and data synchronization.

Availability of External Power The technology for power transmission from shore to the deep sea infrastructures was assessed and tested with the operation of NEMO-SN1 and NEMO-ONDE.
The East-Sicily station deployed on TSN are powered from shore using a dedicated power supply, powered by the 220VAC line, and equipped with a power step-up transformer to 500 VAC The voltage at the offshore cable termination is about 400 VAC.
Instrument installation methodology

The deployment/recovery and connection of the deep-sea structures is performed using the Deep Sea Shuttle (DSS) handling facility (max weight 40 kN) and the dedicated PEGASO ROV (SeaEye  rated 4000 m w.d. with 2 manipulators Schilling).
