Oceanographic features of area ESTOC (ESTOC; 29º10’N, 15º30’W) is situated within the weak southward return flows on the eastern side of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre. ESTOC is an open ocean site in the sense that it is located well outside the highly variable eastern boundary with its strong coastal upwelling regime (although interaction with this regime exists), is deep enough to encompass the eastern subtropical North Atlantic's major water masses including the North Atlantic Deep Water (however not the AABW), is windward of the Canary Islands to avoid wake effects of both the major currents and winds (Canary Current and Northeast Trade Winds), and is far enough from coasts and islands to serve as reference for satellite images and altimetry (the Selvages 100 km northwards are very small and flat).

TNA

Over 15 years of continuous surface and mid-water meteorological, physical and biogeochemical monitoring. Installation has been particularly highlighted in many international fora for its continuous CO2 and pH measurement showing clear correlation between ocean acidification and CO2 trends in the ocean. Seafloor monitoring is an emerging capability at ESTOC (European Station for Time Series in the OCean, Central Eastern Atlantic Ocean), made possible from the recent transfer of mandate to The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN), guaranteeing operational sustainability of the full observatory until 2023. By the time FixO3 starts, PLOCAN will also be starting to operate a scientific offshore platform on the East Coast of Gran Canaria. ESTOC will benefit from the platform day-to-day operations. Surface, mid-water and seafloor are generally operated simultaneously. Current status of infrastructure at time of proposal Surface and water column are currently being redeployed after refurbishment and installations of new electronics. The buoy has continuous satellite link and can host new instruments, connected for realtime transmission or autonomous. Interface interoperability upgrades are currently under study in order to accelerate and harmonise the installation process. The planning of seafloor monitoring is programmed although currently at requirement stage. It is anticipated that as a minimum, either open ports or spaces will be made available at the seafloor for TNA at the early stage of FixO3.

Surface and Mid-water
Hosting: Buoy can host additional instrumentation for atmospheric and air-sea interface. Mooring can host autonomous systems (real-time communication between midwater and surface is not yet implemented). Clamp systems and other mechanical adapters can be manufactured locally upon request. Satellite link is Argos 3 for low data rate systems. Hosting: Any autonomous system can be deployed on the seafloor during the course of the project from the yearly campaign of R/V Sarmiento de Gamboa (large systems) or R/V Ignacio Lozano depending on dimensions. Ports for deep sea communication with surface via acoustic modem are planned from the early stage of FixO3.

Prefered time period for TNA when the cruises for deployment and maintenance will take place.
TNA Support offered Beside logistical, technological and scientific support for all installations, three gliders are available for complementary measurements in the vicinity of the station. Our gliders operate four times a year to and from the ESTOC site, allowing for sensor intercomparison and validation. Variables measured include salinity, temperature, current, depth, turbidity, CDOM, chlorophyll-a, oxygen. CO2 meter is planned for 2012. Hosting of additional instruments: some of our gliders have an open architecture, thus can host a variety of sensors and communication systems, e.g. hydrophone, radiometer, PAR, modem, and small autonomous instruments. AS part of TNA, the preparatory work may include test of equipments a the PLOCAN shore-side and offshore facilities, support on the interfacing, cruise preparation meetings. The teams involved in transnational access will participate to the deployment and to the recovery cruises.
