Over 500 exhibitors from 35 countries showcased research results and products in the world’s largest exhibition on marine sciences and technology. FixO3 was there to present European efforts in integrated fixed-point ocean observations and to promote the upcoming first call for Transnational Access (TNA).

Oceanology International, the biannual world largest exhibition on ocean sciences and technology, took place this year at the ExCel Centre in London, UK, on the 11th, 12th and 13th March 2014. An average of over 15 thousands visitors each day of the exhibition visited the over 500 stands where companies and organisations from a wide range of sectors showcased their products and results. The exhibition fostered discussion around five main core themes: aquaculture, marine sciences, maritime security, oil and gas, and renewable energies. Organisations and businesses providing 79 services were present, including ocean observation services (71 stands), oceanography (117 stands) and Earth sciences (28 stands).

Parallel to the exhibitions, a number of conferences, talks, panel discussions and workshops addressed several themes in ocean sciences and technology including: marine renewables, ocean observation systems, underwater communications, subsea mining, oil and gas, aquaculture, hydrography and geophysics.

FixO3 was present at Oceanology International 2014 (OI 2014) in a number of ways. The project was featured at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) stand on an interactive touch screen, where visitors could explore the project activities, opportunities and observatories.
One day prior to the exhibition, NOC addressed the media with a press release announcing FixO3 presence at OI 2014 and the upcoming opportunity of Transnational Access (TNA) that we were promoting. The press release can be found at the following link:

The upcoming first TNA call, opening in June 2014, was advertised through a flyer, designed by FixO3 partner Blue Lobster (BL), which was distributed to businesses and organizations among the exhibitors. Several FixO3 partners attended the exhibition (e.g., TNA-coordinator PLOCAN, HCMR, SLR, BL, UNEXE, UPC) and approached instrumentation developers and other companies networking with industries and describing the opportunity.

OI 2014 also provided the occasion to meet many FixO3 partners who were present as exhibitors (e.g., NOC, Ifremer, MI, NKE, GEOMAR, MARUM). Informal discussions on current activities and future plans developed around a glass of wine and gave a further opportunity to disseminate the message of TNA to our extended networks.
Two workshops where organised at OI 2014 by the EU projects NEXOS (www.nexosproject.eu) and JERICO (www.jerico-fp7.eu), coordinated by FixO3 partners PLOCAN and IFREMER, respectively. The first focused on current challenges and requirements for sensors development, while the second aimed at identifying the best practices about dissolved oxygen calibration procedure.

After the great experience this year, we are sure that FixO3 will be present at the next Oceanology International event scheduled for March 2016.
